A Cancer Mom’s Insights

Former counselor and mother, Paige Ranson takes an emotional and honest look at life in the face of a seemingly overwhelming series of ongoing emotional and physical challenges that she never anticipated, exploring the effect cancer has on her life, marriage, friendships, and the ideal motherhood she once dreamed of.

Like many parents, Paige didn’t anticipate this reality: a child with a life-threatening illness, often isolated in the pediatric ward at the hospital and also at home, questioning everything, medical professionals, family members, and her own faith. all of which served to change how she viewed her role as parent, wife, and daughter.

With a series of memories, initially captured in her Caring Bridge journal, Paige meets countless challenges as they come, wave after wave, looking for hope, for courage, for a healthy future for her son. From the hospital to the basketball arena, she finds reasons for joy and optimism, finding it in her beloved Duke Blue Devils and examples set by her own parents. She allows her son to revel in the simple things, from Asteroid Cheetos to his granddad’s tractor, with trips to the beach in between. Her words run the gamut of emotions, as she stands strong with newfound faith, grace, and humor.
